Peg Loom Weaving
In July, Amy Ridehalgh from The Craft Cycle generously shared her expertise in peg loom weaving using preloved, recycled materials during the Make, Do & Mend event.
It was a truly delightful evening where everyone had the opportunity to create a wall hanging from recycled materials to take home. Amy provided clear demonstrations, making the process easy to follow. The atmosphere was relaxed, offering ample opportunities to ask questions, share enthusiasm, and discuss experiences related to upcycling.
Amy told us
"I founded The Craft Cycle in order to combine my two greatest passions: crafting and recycling. The project is focused on sustainable crafting by reusing, repurposing and reimagining items we already own to stop the endless consumption cycle that produces waste.
One major area of focus is recycling textiles. I’m specifically focusing on items which are damaged, stained or worn out and can’t be donated to charity shops. I started processing clothes, bedding and other textiles into fabric strips and whilst exploring what I could use them for, I discovered peg loom weaving.
Peg loom weaving is one of the simplest forms of weaving. The peg loom itself is made of a flat piece of wood and a series of pegs slotted into it. The meditative weaving back and forth between the pegs allows you to create thick, durable textiles perfect for using as rugs, cushions and wall hangings. My aim when peg loom weaving is to use what would otherwise be waste and make it into something new and beautiful.
I had the pleasure of leading a skill share workshop where I introduced peg loom weaving and how to process your own fabric into usable strips. The whole group did an incredible job and each produced a unique piece of weaving to take home which could be used as a wall hanging or placemat. It was so great to share my passion with likeminded people and enthuse about sustainable crafting practices together. I can’t wait to see what you produce in the future with your new skills!
