Empowering Homeowners: Free solar and battery advice

Household solar and battery installations are really taking off in the area. And we are doing our bit to help answer questions. In one recent chat, we noted that none of the quotes had considered the need to keep working if the grid failed, given the medical needs of the client. Updated/new quotes were received and the system is now up and running and much more fit-for-purpose.

The most common questions asked and pieces of advice we give are:

  • Solar panels are relatively cheap (so if you pay for scaffolding adding an extra panel or two makes sense)
  • Solar panels don't have to be south facing (even north facing ones will generate about 50% of equivalent south facing ones; almost flat panels on a shed, or wall mounted panels also work well)
  • Batteries give great flexibility
  • A Gateway allows your system and home to keep working during a power cut (without it your system has to shut down if the grid fails)
  • Get an idea of what you need (now, and in the future)
  • Get at least 3 quotes
  • Be flexible - the DNO (local grid) might limit what you can do

If you'd  like an informal chat where we try to answer your questions or point you to other independent advice, please contact us on transitioncrich@gmail.com or come along to the next Share and Repair cafe on Saturday 19 September and have a chat with us.
